Reggio Emilia is a small city in the Emilia Romagna region of Northern Italy. The way in which the Reggio Philosophy has developed has been shaped by the social and cultural influences of the area. The people of Reggio Emilia value encounters, discussion, debate and negotiation. Human relationships are important, and different opinions, viewpoints and cultures welcomed. Elements of The Reggio Approach can be embraced within an Australian context- shaped by our own community influences.
Fundamental to the Reggio Approach is the image of the child-as rich in potential and competent. Childrens' ideas are respected and taken seriously by adults and fellow children, creating an environment in which children are not afraid of making mistakes, or re-establishing their own ideas.
Self confidence and self esteem are fostered through group and one-one discussions and debate.
The role of the teacher/adult is to intervene as little as possible; rather to simply observe, listen, interpret and facilitate childrens' interests by providing interesting and stimulating experiences/resources are encouraged to explore .
The use of physical space, light and colour are designed to maximise the potential of an area, to be flexible and adaptable. The room is created to provide areas that are beautiful, personal and welcoming-all of which enable children to develop their creative abilities and curiosity through exploration, research, alone and with others.
